The frustrating thing about being in the back end of nowhere was Thor felt cut off from his usual forms of communication. He could only check in with his informants when he felt it was secure, and there were a lot fewer opportunities when he was hiding out. The beautiful thing about being here was, besides patrolling the area to make sure they were as safe as possible, he could spend all his time glutting himself on Sif’s body. Not a bad way to while away the hours.

Even now, she sprawled across his chest while they lay on the couch, her hair tickling his skin.

As much as he loved the feel of being inside her, in a way the last three days had been excruciating. He’d been reminded too much of when their marriage had been good, before tragedy and betrayal had torn them asunder. The lines had been clearly drawn after that, and unless they were putting in a public appearance or fucking each other’s brains out, they’d rarely spent any time together. He’d wanted it that way, but…the looming apocalypse had a way of blurring all those carefully constructed boundaries.

Shifting to the left, Sif settled her weight half against the back of the sofa, half on him. He stroked his fingers through her hair, contentment he didn’t want to acknowledge winding through him.

Her question about why he’d never divorced her had been running through his mind on a loop. If he’d been completely honest, he would have admitted he’d never once considered dissolving their union. The possibility was there, of course, and he’d assumed that someday she would want to go through with the renouncement ceremony, but for himself? No. Not even at his most angry, his most agonized. Had that been a form of masochism, sadism, or both? Fuck, he didn’t know anymore.

All he knew was that he’d been hanging on to this marriage for a long time, using it as an excuse to keep her tied to him, to fulfill his need to watch over her and keep her safe. He could have cut her loose, so why hadn’t he? He wasn’t sure he wanted to examine his motivations too closely. He had a feeling he wouldn’t like what it said about him.

She stiffened beside him just as a familiar odor filled his nostrils. She whispered, “Someone’s on my land.”

In return, he hissed, “It’s a giant.”

Setting her aside, he jackknifed to his feet, adrenaline flooding his system. The bear in him bristled, and all his senses screamed a warning at the imminent threat.

“Shit, shit, shit.” Sif scrambled up and dove for her clothes. “How did anyone find us? This place is shielded against detection.”

“Possibly the same way I found out about it, back in the day. Sunstones—they’re used for normal navigation, but they also refract off of magical shields.” And, using that method, it had taken him several years of process of elimination to find this place. “What I want to know is how they got the manpower to find your shield in this short amount of time.
